Redacting Documents From 1972

Fairfax County is the most populous jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a population of 1.1 million people.

The county wanted to be able to balance data access with personal data privacy by redacting records available via its secure, remote access database (which would mean processing 44.5 million pages of historical documents dating from 1742 for the removal of Social Security Numbers).

They also wanted an automated redaction software to process 2.5 million pages of day-forward documents annually. 

The solution for such a large undertaking was automation.  This allowed Fairfax County to balance their constant influx of documents needing redaction with the desire to get hundreds of years of records online, without disrupting service to their citizens.
