EHR Training’s Impact on Satisfaction

In the past, we’ve written about healthcare workplace satisfaction, whether it be related to burnout or how reaching HIMSS Stage 7 can help.  One of the common denominators in terms of how satisfied clinicians are is their EHR.

A recent study of 30,000 physicians by KLAS Research found that initial and follow-up EHR training is what makes physicians satisfied with their medical records systems.  Regardless of the specialty and how EHR satisfaction might skew for a given group, strong training quality increased satisfaction while poor training reduced it.

Healthcare Finance looked at just how these specialties broke down in terms of satisfaction and noted that, “the highest EHR satisfaction [is] among hospital medicine, pathology, and pediatrics specialties, and the lowest overall satisfaction [is] in the areas of orthopedics, cardiology, and plastic surgery.”  The study also found that overall, users of Epic’s EHR were the most satisfied, while rival Cerner lagged behind.

While training made a big difference in satisfaction, personalization had less of an impact.  Rather than having an EHR that’s customized for each individual user, it seems that having a simple interface is what keeps physicians happy in the long term.

Training is a focus for us at Extract, because we know just how much it affects a user’s experience with our software.  While we have a wealth of knowledge in the healthcare industry, we’ve found the adage of saying that ‘if you’ve seen one healthcare system, you’ve seen one healthcare system’ holds true.

This is why, whenever we onboard a new customer, we head on site to view their workflow and provide live, hands-on training so our clients can hit the ground running.  By being on site to lead the discovery and planning for things like sample documents, we find we’re able to start with high accuracy rates rather than building up to them.  If you’d like to know more about software implementation at Extract, or how an on-site visit would be scheduled, please reach out today.
