It’s not too late to make the most of today!  Here are some suggestions for false confessions if you are a healthcare professional still need a doozy:

My professional confessions:

I confess…

… I believe patient care should take a back seat to deep-rooted administrative processes.

… I have done everything I can to optimize my HIM processes.

… I have implemented automation software and it didn’t help improve my workflows.

… I don’t care how fast data gets to the physicians, or if physicians get duplicate records – they don’t scare me.

… I find entering data manually is therapeutic and rewarding to me; plus, data entry errors are impossible.

… I am a nerd when it comes to fully understanding compliance laws and how they relate to my department.

… I am overpaid and over appreciated.

… I enjoy receiving calls from sales reps and look forward to returning their calls immediately.

My management style and department confessions:

I confess…

… I avoid change because deep down I know the way I always have done things is the best.

… I think it is fun to search for data in non-interfaced PDFs in patient records.  It’s like an Easter egg hunt.

… My direct reports all overachieve and pull in the same direction with no room for process improvement.

… I have given my staff too many tools to be successful, so they only focus on meaningful and rewarding tasks.

… My current redaction process is efficient with zero worries of mistakes.

Confessions about other departments:

I confess…

… I believe population and value-based health are fads, and their demands for more data will soon subside.

… I feel spoiled because my IT department always clears their calendar for me, and encourages me bring them new, innovative vendors.

… I don’t understand why paper records aren’t prevailing over electronic ones. I believe it is an IT conspiracy to take power away from the traditional HIM Director.

… I don’t see the value of unstructured data trapped in my DMS when all the important data already is in the EMR.

… I think there is too much data being made available for trending analytics, so unstructured patient data should remain undisturbed in my DMS.

Personal:

I confess…

… I only work 9 to 5 with an hour lunch and never take my work home with me.

… I have too much time to pursue personal interests

… I am relaxed at home because my work life is buttoned up.

… I sleep soundly at night and don’t think about work.

… I leave my computer at work and my phone after work or on weekends.
