Aurora Health Care saw many patients who had tests performed by physicians and specialists outside of its system.  While some of the lab results they would receive were interfaced directly with their technology, many of them would simply come back as scanned image files or faxes.

The increasing volume of these non-interfaced lab results was creating a backlog. Providers had to resort to using scanned images instead of obtaining fast, discrete data in the Epic EMR.  This meant not only searching for the correct image file, but also searching within the file to find the relevant information.
