Before Extract, the only way for the University of Wisconsin Clinical Documentation Services to get lab orders entered into their Epic EMR, was to enter them manually using Epic’s “Enter/Edit” function. This was a very tedious process for staff, that resulted in a high error rate, but it was the only way to give physicians access to the discrete data they needed in the EMR.

UW CDS was only able to enter about five orders per hour when they were doing the process manually. Today, with data entry automated with Extract, over 23 orders are being entered per hour.  Additionally, they were able to nearly double the speed of entering lab test results while still delivering all of the relevant discrete data and documents to the EMR.
