Simplifying Your MIPS Reporting Management
Under MACRA, the MIPS program went into effect at the beginning of this year. Many practices and institutions are deciding which measures they will report on and setting up the infrastructure to provide those reports.
Where measures are defined in such a way that they allow information that is inherently “internal” to your organization, the information to be collected and measured is usually already in the EMR or more easily accessible. For example, where a measure generally says, “for XX diagnoses, what percentage has YY prescribed”, there is the initial burden to be sure you know which patients have this diagnosis, but once defined and recorded in the EMR, reporting the rest is relatively easy: for all patients with XX diagnoses how many have a YY prescription recorded? Report complete.
But what about measures that require actions outside of your organization? Perhaps a follow up with a specialist, an external screening, or a prescription refill that is not interfaced to your EMR. While many measures that require involvement from other organizations may be the right measure for you to focus on due to the nature of your patient population, the burden of the reporting increases. Information on these screenings, specialist visits, refills, etc. are now arriving by fax or as scanned documents.
The information you need is there, but stuck in an electronic document.
Imagine a fax management solution that can sweep up incoming faxes, classify them by document type (mammogram, colonoscopy, ejection fraction, eye exam, etc.), then automatically capture the date of service and any relevant clinical information (ejection fraction %, A1C value, positive/negative, etc.) that is needed for your reporting. This information can go into your EMR and be reported from there or you can opt to have it outputted simply for reporting purposes.
The system will also automate the storage of the original fax or scanned document into your EMR, document management system, or desired storage location with customized naming conventions based on your criteria and the details extracted from the document.
