Northwell and Allscripts’ New EHR
If there’s one group of people who know the ins and outs of an EHR well, it’s the healthcare providers that use it. It would make sense, then, that this would be a great group to help develop a new EHR. According to a recent press release, this is exactly what’s happening, as Northwell Health is teaming up with Allscripts to create a new voice-enabled, machine learning based health record system.
The key to creating a great EHR will be the feedback given from the clinicians who are using it on a day-to-day basis. These clinicians will be working closely with Northwell developers to ensure the experience ends up being user-friendly from their perspective. Allscripts is also bringing in usability experts such as behavioral psychologists to further enhance system navigation. This all leads to the primary goal, which Senior Vice President and CIO John Bosco told POLITICO, “is to give physicians an [EHR] that’s easier to use.”
Northwell has been using Allscripts’ systems for a decade now, and while they will continue to use the Sunrise platform in their hospitals, the goal is to have this new EHR replace Sunrise enterprise-wide.
While Northwell is working on the new system primarily to realize efficiencies within their own organization, they also have an opportunity to receive some of the profits if the system is subsequently marketed and sold to other organizations. According to Definitive Healthcare, Allscripts’ market share stood at 5.7% earlier this year, but this new platform could certainly give them room for further growth.
The cloud-based nature of the system will allow design upgrades made in one instance of the technology to be easily deployed to other hospitals or health systems. Improvements are to be expected, as well, because harnessing machine learning means that the technology will be able to adjust based on how it’s actually being used.
