Medical Records In Your Pocket

For a while now, Apple has been getting involved in your health.  Between its fitness tracking Apple Watch, various medical systems’ apps, and their own Health app, the phone in your pocket has increasingly been becoming a record of your well-being.  The problem has been that this information is stored in and comes from disparate sources, which is a common problem in the healthcare industry.

Since the latest iOS beta release though, Apple is attempting to solve this problem by finally bringing your medical record to your phone.  Healthcare systems aren’t particularly incentivized to share their data with each other, but they’re certainly incentivized to make the customer experience more pleasant.  To this end, major companies have already signed up for the initiative including Johns Hopkins, Cedars-Sinai, and Epic.

Initiatives like this give users greater access to information about their health and will give them a more holistic view of what’s going on with their bodies.  It also allows patients to easily retrieve medical information that will aid doctors in treatment including immunizations, allergies, and historical lab results.

This solution is still in its infancy though, and can’t necessarily become a be-all end-all solution for health record accessibility.  While several hospital systems have contributed to this project, there’s still a big gap between users of Apple’s operating system and Android.  So while Apple is working to solve the interoperability of different pieces of medical information, it’s still restricted to their platform, which reaches a significantly lower number of users than Android.
