About Meaningful Use Stage 2
Meaningful use was developed to ensure compliance to result in improved population health outcomes, increased medical transparency, promote patient care efficiency, empower healthcare staff and patients, provide better clinical outcomes and more robust research data on health organizations. Meaningful use obtains clear objectives that healthcare organizations must meet in order to qualify for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Incentive Programs. To some healthcare professionals, meaningful use stages cause confusion—let’s go over meaningful use stage two.
Meaningful use stage two requires more than 55 percent of all clinical lab tests results ordered by the eligible professionals (EPs) during the EHR reporting period. These results are either in a positive/negative or numerical format and are incorporated in certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) as structured data. The reason for this is that incomplete or misplaced test results make efficient, safe, and effective clinical decision-making difficult. Having lab and test results in the patient’s record allows for ease of access and reference when and where it is needed. The availability of structured lab results within the EHR contributes to office efficiencies while also assisting providers in the ability to make real time decisions about the patient’s care. Having interfaces would be the most ideal scenario, but this is not a reality for many healthcare organizations due to cost and the demand for resources. For hospitals that must manually capture test results from send-out labs in the LIS that are faxed, scanned or mailed, Extract provides the intelligent data capture solution to eliminate manual data entry and human error. Unlike scanning software, Extract pulls the clinical test data that physicians need into the discrete LIS and/or EHR data fields (not a just an attachment in the patient record) they must be in to comply with CMS meaningful use without the expense and overhead of implementing and maintaining point-to-point lab interface.
This intelligent, advanced OCR technology can eliminate the need for expensive interfaces and integrates easily using HL7 with EPIC, Cerner, Meditech, Athena Health, Allscripts, Nextgen, eClinicalworks EMR/EHR and other systems like LIS Systems Beaker, Sunquest, Orchard, Softlab.
