Empowering Government Data

May 22, 2018

When you think of tech-savvy organizations and groups that do things with the power of big data, governments aren’t usually the first to spring to mind.  The Chief Data Officer (CDOs) position is a role that didn’t even exist until the past several years.  With the vast amounts of data that governments collect, this position has gained increased importance and is shedding light on insights that may have previously gone unnoticed.

Part of the push to use data more effectively has been as the result of governments sharing not just results, but the processes that enable them or hinder them from gleaning useful information.  To that end, the Civil Analytics Network was formed, allowing member governments to share best practices and more effectively use their data.

Overall, the participants in this group are striving to produce a vision that is collaborative, educational, and fair.  The CDOs involved in this project have put together seven steps that advance this goal that can be found here.  These initiatives can lead to things like smarter taxes, better traffic patterns, and generally provide better services to citizens.

Extract’s mission is to empower governments and healthcare organizations to be able to use their data safely and more effectively.  Our state of the art redaction tool, IDShield, automatically identifies key pieces of sensitive information, removing it from court documents and land records so the information contained therein can be shared with the public.  Out data extraction tool gathers discrete results from non-interfaced documents, allowing for trending and insight without the hassle of manual data entry.
