Clinician Input in Healthcare AI

February 2, 2018

If there’s one constant in the healthcare industry, it’s change.  New technology is something that healthcare organizations are always evaluating and implementing, and one of the most interesting technologies might be Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to independently observe a variety of patient vitals and give a diagnosis recommendation without having to set foot in a doctor’s office.  While this might sound like something you’d expect to see in a sci-fi movie, these products are here now.  Recently, the FDA gave approval for an Apple Watch band with an EKG sensor built-in to monitor heart health and alert users to any abnormalities.

Human Input

Healthcare AI needs to work in concert with the humans using it, not as a replacement.  The results that come from any AI interface is only as good as the data that it’s based on.  Bad data can lead to improper conclusions and diagnoses, which can occur as a result of not having humans to verify both the data entering the system and the results that are delivered.  Bad data also has the potential to magnify itself if left unchecked.

AI Design

If clinicians are working in concert with AI, though, treatment and care can be greatly enhanced.  Outsourcing data processing to AI allows for incredibly large volumes of data to be not only processed, but also used for research and analysis.  Additionally, allowing machines to collect and analyze data allows professionals to spend their time using their expertise to make the best care decisions possible.

Furthermore, clinicians are needed to provide what machines can’t, meaningful human interaction.  Patients both expect and benefit from interactions with their doctors, and AI should be leveraged to give clinicians the time they need to do this.

Using AI at Extract

Extract uses a form of artificial intelligence with our machine learning systems that get better at recognizing your documents and the data contained within them.  We also understand the importance of input and work directly with your team to ensure that we’re on the same page.  Healthcare, as we all know, rarely has a one size fits all solution.
