A Collaborative Initiative with Google
In a strategic move to support its workforce and position itself as a leader in technology, Oklahoma has launched a new initiative in collaboration with Google to provide AI training for its residents. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bridge the skills gap in the rapidly evolving job market and equip Oklahomans with the tools necessary for future success.
The AI Essentials Course: A Gateway to the Future
The centerpiece of this initiative is the AI Essentials course, a free, online program designed to offer foundational AI skills to 10,000 residents at a time. The course, which does not require a degree or prior experience, provides hands-on training in AI, emphasizing responsible and ethical use. This offering aligns with Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt’s vision of making the state a national leader in AI by fostering an agile and competitive workforce.
“By providing access to foundational AI skills, we are preparing our workforce for the demands of tomorrow’s economy,” said Gov. Stitt. “Our partnership with Google is a significant step towards ensuring that Oklahomans are ready to meet the needs of industries that are increasingly reliant on AI.”
Addressing the Skills Gap
The importance of AI training cannot be overstated. According to the World Economic Forum, 50% of employees will need reskilling by 2025 due to technological advancements. This course aims to address this pressing need by empowering workers across various industries such as energy, agriculture, aviation, and manufacturing. Research from the Oklahoma State Chamber Research Foundation indicates that early AI adoption can optimize operations and enhance economic output in these sectors.
Participants in the AI Essentials course will gain practical experience through videos, readings, and interactive exercises. The course, which can be completed in under 10 hours, culminates in a certificate from Google, enhancing the employability and career prospects of its graduates. Nearly 2,000 individuals signed up within the first week of the course’s launch, reflecting the high demand and enthusiasm among Oklahomans.
A Broad and Inclusive Effort
The initiative’s inclusivity is evident in its design to cater to a wide demographic, from job seekers looking to upskill to those re-entering the workforce. The state will track various metrics to gauge the course’s impact, including completion rates and geographical data to ensure broad participation. Efforts are also in place to target rural communities, ensuring that the benefits of AI training reach every corner of the state.
John Suter, Oklahoma’s Chief Operating Officer and OMES Executive Director, emphasized the long-term benefits of the program. “Generations of Oklahomans have the opportunity to benefit from this program as technology continues to evolve within the workplace. We want to give Oklahoma professionals a competitive edge and harness the responsible application of AI tools as we work to recruit more companies to our great state.”
Building on a Legacy of Digital Skills Training
This initiative is the latest in Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance digital skills in Oklahoma. Since 2017, Google’s skilling programs have trained over 147,000 Oklahomans through partnerships with more than 100 local organizations. The new AI Essentials course builds on this foundation, complementing existing programs like the Google Career Certificates, which have already seen significant success, with 85% of graduates in Oklahoma securing gainful employment.
Additionally, Google has introduced the Generative AI for Educators course, aimed at helping middle and high school teachers integrate AI into their teaching. This course will be offered in several Oklahoma public school districts, further embedding AI skills within the educational system and preparing the next generation for a technology-driven future.
Oklahoma’s collaboration with Google is a forward-thinking initiative that underscores the state’s commitment to technological advancement and workforce development.
