With social media usage on the rise in recent years there has been a widespread concern that misinformation is being shared across those social platforms. Social platforms are a great resource for catching up with old friends, sharing photos of your puppy, and are always a great place to find valuable information and opinions. But it can also be a place where misleading information is spread, especially during an election. In an attempt to combat this growing issue, Twitter announced its plan to roll out a new feature that gives users the option to report a tweet that contains false or misleading information about a given election.

The new tool, announced last week, allows a user to flag a post with misleading information about anything election related, including how to register to vote and voter ID requirements. Twitter’s @TwitterSafety blog explained, “Voting is a fundamental human right and the public conversation occurring on Twitter is never more important than during elections. Any attempts to undermine the process of registering to vote or engaging in the electoral process is contrary to our company’s core values.”

As stated on their blog, the following are considered content violations (but the list is not limited to the following):

• Misleading information about how to vote or register to vote (for example, that you can vote by Tweet, text message, email, or phone call);

• Misleading information about requirements for voting, including identification requirements; and

• Misleading statements or information about the official, announced date or time of an election.

 Users will be able to report content both within the app and/or on their desktop by: 1.) Select “report Tweet” from the drop-down menu, 2.) Select “it’s misleading about voting”, 3.) Select the option that best tells Twitter how the Tweet is misleading about voting (or said topic), 4.) Submit your report.

As of now, this feature is still in the process of being rolled out globally. Right now, the EU and India are utilizing the tool, and other nations can expect the tool to be rolled out throughout the year.
