Leveraging AI to Improve Workflows and Efficiencies

The healthcare industry is ready for some major changes.  From new cancer treatments to more precise radiology scans there are really endless opportunities for healthcare organizations to utilize new technology to allow for more precise and efficient patient care.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, offers a number of advantages over traditional analytics and clinical decision-making techniques.  AI uses learning algorithms that become more precise and accurate as they interact with training data sets, allowing physicians a much deeper picture into diagnostics, care processes, treatment, and patient outcomes.

A recent survey published in Nature shows physicians believe that, “AI-based diagnostic platforms can improve the predictive and prognostic power of the traditional pathology approach used in healthcare organizations.”

And here at Extract, that is exactly what we have been doing. Our solution, HeathyData, is a document classification and extraction platform, in which we take your outside unstructured documents (think faxes and scans), have OCR software read the data on the documents (like a human would) both quickly and accurately, then automatically extract the data elements and route the information in your desired downstream system.

The survey reported that three-quarters of physicians surveyed believe an AI tool could bring improvements in both workflow efficiency and quality.

Aurora Health Care has found great successes with the HealthyData platform; they experienced a 366% increase in document processing time and saw a 40% reduction of data entry time of with an error rate of less than 1%. “Extract has allowed us to capture lab results data through an automated process. We have been able to standardize our workflow and decrease clerical errors,” explained Lori Heinen, the LIS project manager at Aurora Health Care.

Many of the survey respondents felt that AI tools could increase (58 percent) or even dramatically increase (66 percent) diagnostic efficiency.

UW-Health, whose transplant department is another user of the HealthyData platform, has seen an increase in their efficacy since deploying. They are now entering tests 80% faster, test results are in the EMR in just over 12 hours, and priority data is in the EMR within an hour. Maximizing their efficiency allows for quicker diagnosis and quicker treatment plans.

It is Extract’s mission to help hospitals and other organizations simplify their workflows to increase data accuracy and deliver better patient care. Interested in learning more about how our HealthyData platform can help your organization? Reach out today.
