What to Expect at HIMSS 2020: Change

UPDATE: HIMSS has announced that the 2020 Global Health Conference & Exhibition has been cancelled due to recent updates from the CDC and WHO regarding the coronavirus.  Please see a link to their press release here: HIMSS Statement

Next week the 2020 HIMSS Global Health Conference is taking place in Orlando Florida. This year’s theme is: Be the change. So wither you are attending the conference or are just interested in what is happing in the industry, today we are rounding up a few themes and products that are being unveiled at the show, all of which will bring change to the healthcare world.

Unified Patient Record

Innovaccer plans to launch its “unified patient record” model at this year’s conference. This new interface would allow organizations to collect data and pull from several of a patient’s healthcare experiences to provide a more complete view of that given patient.

This comes as the healthcare industry as a whole is making shift towards value-based care.

Voice Listening Tech

Vocera, who is a communications IT Vendor, plans to showcase itsnew ambient voice Smartbadge. The idea is that any caregiver wearing the Smartbadge could issue a command or instruction while remaining hands free, which is great for several departments, including surgical teams. A user would simply say “Vocera, hey Vocera, or Ok, Vocera”. The badge can make calls, create voice messages, communicate with care teams, and even respond to events and or alerts.

AI and Machine Learning In Healthcare

"Between 12 to 18 million Americans every year will experience some sort of diagnostic error," said Paul Cerrato, a journalist and researcher. A shocking number to say the least. At this year’s conference Cerrato and Mayo Clinic Platform President, Dr. John Halamka will be taking the time to discuss a new HIMSS Book Series: Reinventing Clinical Decision Support: Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Diagnostic
Reasoning.

The discussion is scheduled for Monday, March 9, from 1:30-2:10 p.m. in Rosen Centre Executive Ballroom H.

FHIR’s Future

Professionals can expect to get information regarding what to expect from FHIR, what it can currently do, and what its future looks like. Micky Tripathi who is the president and CEO of the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative Project, and manager of the Argonaut project alongside Grahame Grieve, FHIR product director, HL7 International, are sitting down to answer questions many healthcare professionals are asking; such as when/if their EHR will be FHIR-enabled.
